Chapter 7

Luna woke up at her normal time and stared at the beautiful white dress in the darkness. She couldn’t believe that this was her wedding day. And she’d only met her groom a few days ago. It was so surreal, she couldn’t quite wrap her mind around it.

Of all the different ways she’d pictured her wedding day, this cold, unromantic proposal, this horrible, demeaning process would not have even entered her mind. How had her world changed so dramatically in just two days? She’d been feeding the chickens! She’d been baking and humming that morning. She’d made the beds and cleaned the bathrooms…she’d done everything right!

So how could everything be so wrong now? Looking around her room, she couldn’t stop the tears as she thought about her future. Dassar was not the man she’d thought him to be when she’d first seen him.

Or maybe he was! Maybe the hardness, the ruthless man was there and she’d just been too silly and wrapped up in her romantic fantasies to see the real person.

Well, she was marrying the real man. All of the benefits of her future couldn’t seem to ease the sadness she felt at the prospect of a marriage without love.

She sighed and stared up at the ceiling, ignoring the beautiful dress that had been waiting for her when she’d come back from dinner last night with Dassar. He hadn’t made love to her last night. He’d left her at her door with a gentle kiss and a promise that he would make it as right as he could.

What did that even mean? How could he make things right? How could he change this reality so that it was palatable to her? It was impossible! He was just a ruthless man who needed a bride and she was the most vulnerable! She’d been the stupid one who had contacted him, raised herself to his awareness and so she had to face the future because she’d done this to herself! She’d put herself into this position by contacting him in the first place.

So instead of dwelling on the issue and letting her mind start to panic, she slid out of bed and jumped into the shower. She would make breakfast and get things ready, pretend that it was just an ordinary day. If she started to think otherwise, she would start to cry and she simply couldn’t do that. Not today. And probably not for a long time. She needed to learn to be tough, strong. And she needed to stop showing her emotions and thoughts on her face. Dassar could read her too easily! She’d put herself into a vulnerable position with her mortgage and now she was hurting. She absolutely would not be vulnerable to him again!

When she was dressed in leggings and an oversized sweatshirt, she moved into the kitchen and pulled the sausage and egg casseroles out of the fridge, sliding them into the oven. She hadn’t even pre-heated the oven as she normally would but she didn’t care.
